In written pieces, endings have special significance. The ends of sentences, the ends of paragraphs, the ends of essays, articles, books — all are positions for delivering a thought with particular emphasis and impact.
When a piece of writing leads us smoothly through its topics, we say it flows well. Each sentence prepares us in some way for the next. Each seems to follow naturally, perhaps almost inevitably, one from the other. We always feel well located in the discussion. We know where we’re going, very clearly, in the moment, and we are engaged at the same time in putting together the bigger picture.
